Lock & Dam 11
LOCK & DAM 11
Dubuque, IA
Project Size:
5,200 Feet Overall
1,278 Foot Wide Dam Structure
Project Overview:
Lock and Dam 11 was constructed between 1934 and 1937. It was the last lock and dam on the Upper Mississippi River to be rehabilitated under the major rehabilitation and major maintenance program. It had virtually remained untouched without improvements since its initial construction. This rehabilitation improved the safety, working and operating conditions at the site. Faith Technologies has been involved in various phases of lock and dam rehabilitation unbroken since 1989 and includes work on Lock and Dams 3, 4, 5, 5A, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11.
Construction began in September 2005 to rehabilitate Lock and Dam 11. The lock opened on schedule in March 2008 to barge traffic.
The rehabilitation included resurfacing the lock chamber, repairing concrete on the upper and lower guide walls, replacing the lock machinery, installing new downstream bulkhead slots and replacing the lock's electrical systems. Some specific electrical systems replacements include Switchboard 1 (SB1), which is the major control cabinet for the lock; upstream and downstream controls; lighting; each existing conduit via new concrete encased duct bank; and all wiring. The dam rehabilitation included replacement of all gate control cabinets, rotary cam limit switches, lighting, local control stations, conduit and wiring.
